On June 1, 2022, the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) in partnership with New Energy Nexus Philippines (NEX) held a special learning session on Intellectual Property (IP) entitled, “How to make money from your Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights”. This was done as part of the terms in the signed memorandum of agreement between New Energy Nexus Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University.
The learning session was held online and was attended by ten (10) startup members together with the representatives from NEX. New Energy Nexus is an international, non-profit organization that creates opportunities for energy businesses, startup founders, enthusiasts and other stakeholders to take an active role in the Philippines’ energy transition through entrepreneurship and innovation.

Presented by Ms Vanessa Malapit of AIPO’s Protection and Education Group (PEG), and Mr Bryan Erfe, of AIPO’s Commercialization and Business Incubation Group (CBIG), the main objective of this learning activity was to educate the startups about the value of patents, trademarks, and copyrights for their inventions. Specifically, the session aimed to: (1) educate the startups on the importance of applying for intellectual property protection for their inventions, and (2) to help the startups on various strategies on how to earn profits and commercialize their inventions.
At the end of the session, the importance of intellectual property to the participants' inventions was made clear to them. Moreover, the participants were able to adapt new strategies that they might use in their startups to successfully market their technologies.
The continued partnership of the AIPO and NEX will provide more opportunities for business and intellectual property consultation to these startups. NEX and AIPO shall continue to explore other potential collaboration activities that could benefit innovators and foster the development of a better innovation ecosystem for NEX and its members.
