On December 2-3, 2024, a team from the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO)  made its way to Coron and Busuanga in Palawan. The initiative aimed to bring science closer to students and educators by addressing the challenges posed by the inaccessibility and fragility of traditional laboratories through Ateneo’s Lab-in-a-Box. This innovation offers schools a way to make science learning hands-on, engaging, and accessible, even in resource-limited settings.

The team’s journey began with a courtesy visit to the Coron Mayor’s Office, where they were welcomed by Engr Michael Adrian Fababeir of the Coron Planning Office, followed by visits to several schools: Coron School of Fisheries in Coron, as well as Concepcion National High School, Salvacion National High School, and New Busuanga National High School in Busuanga.

As the team engaged with educators and observed the conditions in these schools, they uncovered significant challenges. Many students faced barriers to academic motivation due to their families' struggles to meet basic needs. Additionally, a lack of adequately trained science teachers highlighted the need for targeted training programs to empower educators in the area.

Despite these challenges, the visit was filled with hope and positivity. Teachers and students alike were enthusiastic about the potential of the Lab-in-a-Box to spark curiosity and develop love for science. The roadshow provided a platform for meaningful conversations with educators, giving the team insights into how they could further support these communities.

Looking ahead, the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO), in collaboration with the School of Science and Engineering (SoSE) of Ateneo de Manila University, is committed to build on the connections established during the roadshow. By aligning their expertise with the needs of these schools, they aim to create impactful projects that not only enhance science education but also inspire students to dream big despite their circumstances.

This roadshow reaffirmed the belief that meaningful change starts with observation and  understanding. As the Lab-in-a-Box initiative continues to expand, the team is driven by the vision of igniting curiosity and building a brighter future for students in Coron, Busuanga, and even beyond the region.
