Problem solving in business means identifying an obstacle, understanding its causes, and choosing the best solution to keep the organization moving forward. It involves defining the issue clearly, weighing options and tradeoffs, deciding, and reviewing results. It is imperative to businesses because markets and resources are limited and constantly changing: unresolved problems compound, and strong problem-solving skills drive better decisions, stronger leadership, and innovation.​​
​​Catan functions as a powerful tool in improving problem solving skills as players must constantly weigh trade-offs, which sharpens problem-solving, strategic thinking, resource management, and adaptability. Players must convince others that a trade benefits everyone even while pursuing their own advantage, a skill directly transferable to leadership, where guiding a group toward a shared goal while managing competing interests.


Because the game rewards reading other players' incentives, forming temporary alliances, and adapting plans when the board throws up an obstacle, it's an accessible way to practice resource management, adaptability, and collaborative decision-making.
