AIPO Promotes Intellectual Property Among Young Innovators

On September 25, 2024, the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) conducted an Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness Session for students enrolled in the Leadership and Strategy (LAS50) elective course, led by Prof. Mark Dennis V. Uyaco. The session was held at the Arete Eduardo J. Aboitiz Sandbox (Blue Nest Incubation Space), which aimed to introduce future entrepreneurs to the fundamentals of IP and its vital role in protecting business ideas.

The presentation was led by Ms Vanessa Malapit, Head of the Protection and Education Group (PEG) at AIPO, who discussed essential IP concepts, including Patents, Trademarks, Utility Models (UM), Industrial Designs (ID), and Copyright. Ms Malapit emphasized the importance of these IP tools in safeguarding innovative ideas and brand identities, which are key for business differentiation.

Following her talk, Mr Bryan Erfe, AIPO’s Business Development Officer, highlighted how IP can be commercialized through licensing, selling, or leveraging it to attract investors. He stressed the significance of securing IP rights for business growth and long-term success.

The session provided students with valuable insights into IP applications and protection strategies, equipping them with tools to confidently innovate in a competitive market. By integrating IP awareness into their learning, students are better prepared to navigate the entrepreneurial landscape with confidence, ensuring their ideas and innovations are protected as they develop their business endeavors.
