Innovation in Sports: The History of The Climbing Shoe

Each year, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) selects a theme that shows how intellectual property touches ordinary life. For 2026, that theme is "IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate", a reminder that patents, trademarks, and copyrights are working quietly behind the scenes of every sport and driving the innovation that keeps athletes performing at their best. (World Intellectual Property Organization, 2026).

In that spirit, it's worth looking at bouldering, a sport that has been steadily gaining traction in the Philippine fitness scene. Bouldering strips rock climbing down to its essentials: no ropes, no harnesses, just short, technical routes that test a climber's strength, balance, and problem-solving (Boulder Brighton, n.d.). At the center of it all is one essential piece of gear—the climbing shoe. Far from an overnight invention, it's the product of almost a century of steady refinement.
The First Climbing Shoes
In 1930s France, climber Pierre Allain found mountaineering boots useless for the precision bouldering demanded, so he reinforced his sneakers with glued-on rubber. By 1947, that tinkering became the PA boot, the first shoe designed purely for climbing. In 1950, shoemaker Edmond Bourdonneau bought the business and rebranded it EB, the first climbing shoe to carry a brand name. As the "Super Gratton," it became the shoe of choice for climbers across Europe. Even so, getting hold of a pair wasn't always easy in these early years, since distribution was still patchy, and plenty of climbers kept relying on ordinary sneakers and tennis shoes in the meantime (Sam, 2024; EB Climbing, n.d.).

The Slip-Lasted Breakthrough
In 1979, Spain's Boreal released the Fire, the first shoe with a rubber compound engineered specifically for rock friction (Boreal, 2024). Then, in 1985, Boreal's Ninja introduced slip-lasting — sewing the upper into a sock-like shape that was pulled onto a mold, rather than gluing rubber to a stiff board. This construction method, still used today, made shoes dramatically more sensitive and better-fitting (Sam, 2024).

A Patchwork of Patents
Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, the climbing shoe design that most of the world now wears wasn't the work of any one inventor. Instead, it came together as a collection of separate breakthroughs from rival companies, each contributing its own piece to the puzzle:
Five Ten's downturned, asymmetric last, introduced with the UFO in 1991 (Gripped, 2019; Sam, 2023)
Sticky rubber compounds such as Five Ten's Stealth rubber (Sam, 2023) and La Sportiva's Vibram XS Grip2 (La Sportiva, n.d.-a)

Because no single company holds the rights to "the modern climbing shoe," the shoes climbers use today are really dozens of patented technologies, stacked on top of one another and built on a design concept that's over a century old.

Bouldering Goes Mainstream
As gyms multiplied in the 2000s–2010s, climbing needed a cheap, durable shoe for beginners. Red Chili's Session (2013) became the first purpose-built rental shoe. A small innovation that helped fuel bouldering's boom among younger climbers, scaling plastic holds at gyms everywhere (Sam, 2024; Red Chili, n.d.). This was when several other climbing shoe brands joined the market for rentals within the climbing industry (Climbing Business Journal, 2022).

The Future of Climbing Shoes
Olympic speed climbing pushed shoes further, like La Sportiva's ultralight Cobra 4.99 (2020), the first shoe built specifically for speed-climbing competition (La Sportiva, n.d.-b). But the bigger driver going forward may be bouldering itself, which has exploded among younger climbers drawn to its social, gym-friendly, no-ropes-needed appeal. As that audience grows, so does the market, pushing brands to keep innovating. Expect more sustainable rubber and adhesive alternatives (Rock Spot Climbing, 2025) and 3D-printed, foot-scanned custom lasts, following the lead of shoes like Athos (Climbing, 2023), in the years ahead. None of it happens by accident; every downturned toe and sticky sole is a protected idea someone thought worth developing, which is exactly why IP matters in sports.
