Welcome back to our blog series celebrating Filipino creativity and innovation through the Imbento Lang! Podcast- a joint effort between the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO), the Eugenio Lopez Jr. Center for Multimedia Communication, and Areté. This series is a space where inventors share their own creative processes and explore what drives their passion for invention and innovation. Our new episode features Mr. Patrick de Guzman, founder of Saltric, an innovator and entrepreneur for renewable energy sources for the Philippines.

Patrick De Guzman is currently a first-year law student, with a bachelor’s degree in political economy. He is the inventor of the Marissa Turbine, a vertical-axis tidal turbine made out of affordable and sustainable components, deployed in oceans to harvest energy. His dedication to innovation was recognized by EO Philippines, winning at the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards 2024 (GSEA).
Patrick embarked on his innovation journey after reading about the Philippines' heavy reliance on dirty fossil fuels, which make up 70% of its energy sources. His understanding of political and economic frameworks allowed him to recognize the potential for sustainable energy in the country, provided there is sufficient political and economic willpower. His first venture, a salt panel that harnessed electricity from the interaction of saltwater and the panel, was promising but he pivoted his focus in 2021 to a new, more advanced technology: the Marissa Turbine.
The Marissa Turbine, named in honor of Patrick’s late mother, represents a breakthrough in renewable energy technology. Unlike traditional turbines, this turbine can generate electricity from movements in multiple directions. Inspired by other innovators, Patrick refined the turbine to be cheaper, safer, and more reliable, offering limitless potential for sustainable energy generation. This development signifies a significant step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels in the Philippines.
Mr. Patrick de Guzman inspires others to pursue an emotional attachment to our innovations– as an emotional connection for our vision in giving back to the community. He invites our young minds to instill ‘ink is better than think’ and to share our ideas with the world. These are just parts of what we can learn from the Imbento Lang! Podcast. Patrick de Guzman is just one of the many brilliant minds of the country who continues to inspire a new generation of innovators with the heart of purpose for their community.
