From Waste to Wonder as nature’s engineer: "Imbento Lang!" Podcast Series: The Waste Cycle Art with Lemeul Arizo

Welcome back to our blog series celebrating Filipino creativity and innovation through the Imbento Lang! Podcast- a joint effort between the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO), the Eugenio Lopez Jr. Center for Multimedia Communication, and Areté. This series is a space where inventors share their own creative processes and explore what drives their passion for invention and innovation. Today, we introduce you Mr. Lemuel Arizo, an innovator that has contributed to society through the fields of chemistry, biotechnology, and renewable energy with his innovations. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of TESLABARC INCORPORATED.

Mr. Arizo holds a Masters degree of Hydrotherapy from Seoul Jangsin University (2006), an Applied MBA from Executive Development Academy (2011), and is currently pursuing a Master of Renewable Energy at the Renewable Energy Institute (2024-2025). His dedication to the renewable energy and agriculture sector of the country led his innovation of the Waste Cycle Art.

Mr. Lemuel Arizo has been pioneering sustainable solutions in the Philippines, a country he notes is a major contributor to plastic pollution, primarily due to the widespread use of sachets. Instead of seeing waste, Arizo saw potential. He developed an innovative material from discarded plastic, similar to plywood, which he uses in projects like the “Baka na gawa sa Basura” – a boat crafted from trash that benefits local fishermen. Arizo also engineered blades for a renewable energy turbine, emphasizing the versatility of this light and eco-friendly material.

Inspired by the natural water management of beavers, Arizo and his team devised a technology that holds water in mountains, mimicking a beaver dam. This biomimicry approach mitigates flooding, prevents soil erosion, and ensures a year-round water supply for farmers, without the need for traditional dams. To further support water conservation, he envisions water banks made from the same plastic-based material, offering lightweight yet durable solutions to the agricultural sector.

Mr. Lemuel Arizo emphasizes that passion for innovation unlocks the potential of nature to address our pain points in society. He continues his vision of innovation to hopefully make the Philippines into an innov-nation. These are just parts of what we can learn from the Imbento Lang! Podcast. Mr. Arizo is just one of the many brilliant minds of the country who continues to inspire a new generation of innovators with the heart of purpose for their community.
