Unlocking Hands-On Science: The Official Launch of Lab-in-a-Box

The pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to education, particularly in delivering effective science learning. When students shifted to remote setups, traditional laboratories and hands-on experimentation became inaccessible. Recognizing this gap, the School of Science and Engineering (SoSE) at Ateneo de Manila University took an innovative step. The result was the creation of the Lab-in-a-Box project—a response to ensure that scientific learning remains engaging, accessible, and practical whether at home or in alternative settings.

Lab-in-a-Box is a carefully crafted kit comprised of essential laboratory equipment, materials, a worksheet and a manual to ensure that students would be able to complete lab work comparable to the work they would have performed in school lab. Each kit is designed to facilitate various science experiments, tailored to the STEM education curriculum outlined by the Department of Education.

Now extending this innovative solution, Ateneo SoSE in collaboration with the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO), have officially launched and made available the Lab Kits nationwide. Lab-in-a-Box is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on scientific practice. These portable, comprehensive kits empower teachers and students to conduct experiments, fostering curiosity and comprehension.

Early adopters have already experienced the value of this educational tool. Last October 2024, Holy Cross College of Sasa, Inc. and Davao Christian High School received their Lab-in-a-Box kits, marking significant milestones in the project’s initial rollout. Ateneo Junior High School, recognizing the potential for enriched learning, has also placed orders to integrate these kits into their curriculum. Additionally, homeschooling parents have embraced Lab-in-a-Box, showcasing its versatility as a safe and effective resource for home-based education.
